The Schreiner University in Kerrville, Kerr County, owes its name to Captain Charles A. Schreiner. Although Captain Schreiner was born and raised in France in his earlyears, he came to fame in the US due to his association with the Confederacy and his subsequent service with the Texas Rangers. When Kerr County was still a remote place with people abandoning it for more convenient locations, Captain Schreiner established a merchandising company in this region and is said to have owned 600,000 thousand acres of land in and around Kerr County. In fact, he is credited to have encouraged settlement of people in this region.

In 1923, the Schreiner Institute was established to facilitate high-grade instruction and to provide military training. Over the years, military training was discontinued when the institutions started taking in girls and moved to impart college-level education. In February 2001, Schreiner Institute attained the status of Schreiner University. The university has carved a niche for itself with its majors and programs in professional disciplines, liberal arts, and sciences.

Schreiner University is located northwest of San Antonio and is very easily accessible from the Gulf Coast and Mexico via the state and interstate highways. The weather in this part of Kerr County is usually pleasant all through the year.

The university encourages sports among men and women. Some of the widely played games on campus are baseball, basketball, golf, soccer, and volleyball. In fact, the university draws up weekly sports schedules. The university intends to encourage a competitive spirit among all its students, which can prepare them for the different challenges in their future life and career. In 1998, Schreiner University became a member of the American Southwest Conference. After the competitive sports season ends at Schreiner University, its stars are recognised by the NCAA Division III league.
