Anyone who is thinking about traveling to Kerr County should take the time to explore its long and rich history. It is only by understanding the history of this region that visitors can truly understand the richness of this unique county. There is archaeological research that seems to confirm that humans first inhabited the area around 8000 BC. It has long been an area that drew a variety of people to its boarders. While it has only been known as Kerr County for a very brief part of his history, its rich history makes the area unique.
The original inhabitants of the region were Native Americans. The Lipan-Apache, Kiowa and Comanche, as well as several lesser-known tribes, once called this area home. These people were traditionally nomadic and wondered through the area known today as Kerr County for hundreds of years. Theirs were the first cultures to make an impact on the region.
Next, during the 16th and 17th centuries, the Spanish began to conquer parts of Latin and South America. Explorers such as Alonso Alvarex de Pineda and Hernando Cortez delved into Texas and subjected the area to the rule of the Spanish. While the French briefly gained control of the area, the Spanish influences can be clearly seen today.
During the 1800’s, the territory that is known today as Texas broke away from the control of the Spanish and declared its independence. It was this move that led to the eventual inclusion of Texas into The United States.
