It is not uncommon for an area in Texas to have temporary burn bans, and in some areas, temporary is so often it almost seems permanent. The reason for it is in dry, drought-like seasons, fire safety is a huge issue, not only to prevent wildfires, but also to keep the air clean.

The National Weather Service will issue fire weather watches when it looks like a red flag situation could develop in the next 72 hours and red flag warnings when conditions (heat, humidity, and vegetation) are likely to increase the risk for wildfires.

The Keetch-Byram Drought Index measures fire potential based on the moisture in the top 8 inches of soil. Zero means soil is at complete saturation, meaning the higher the number, the drier the land and therefore, the more risk to uncontrollable fires. Most plants gain their moisture from the air, so when the KBDI is low, it doesn’t necessarily mean the plants are less likely to be dry enough to be a hazard.

Before travelling or planning certain family outings, you may want to check to see if a burn ban is in effect for the area. Kerr County’s Burn Ban Hotline is 830-315-BURN.

Always think fire safety, and don’t burn anything if there is no wind or too much wind. Monitor any burning activity from beginning to end, and keep water or fire extinguishers handy. If outdoor grilling is a no-no, think food safety as well. Try to keep warm foods above 140 degrees and cold foods below 40 degrees. The Texas Interagency Coordination Center (TICC) is a great resource for more information regarding Texas Fire and Emergency Management.

If you violate the burn bans, it is considered a Class C Misdemeanor with a fine up to $500.
