One of the most unique initiatives in Kerr County has been a drive to create a sanctuary for endangered specials. Over the past decade, throughout the Texas Hill Country, over 32 species of exotic or endangered animals have been relocated to sanctuaries. Time and careful management has allowed these species to flourish. In fact, some of the herds in Texas represent the only known herds of some of the animals.
Anyone interested in viewing some of these endangered species should take the time to stop by the Kerrville Convention and Visitors Bureau. There you can find a free publication that will provide you with all the information you need to travel across the Hill Country and view these spectacular animals.
As you note some of the species, you will likely realize that many of them have been literally saved from extinction. Some of the more exotic animals no longer exist in their country of origin and only can be seen ‘free’ in Kerr County. This has been made possible thanks to the diligent efforts of the Hill Country Game Ranchers.
While exact counts are not available, many estimate that there are currently over 100,000 animals in the program. Over the next few years, the program hopes to add more species, bringing the total number of represented species to over 50.
While there is nothing exotic about Kerr County, it is certainly home to some of the most exotic animals in the world. Everyone who visit’s the area should take the time to see them.
