County Clerk

The name “Clerk” is derived from the Latin “Clericus”, meaning clergyman. It had its orgin in the historical fact that in the early days of England, the subordinate officers of the courts of justice, as well as the judges, were chosen from the clergy being the only educated class in England. In the colonies, the establishment of the courts of justice with the appointment of the judges and subordinate officers was a prerogative of the crown. Clerks were also appointed for the general sessions of the peace and registers of deeds in their respective counties. Today, a Clerk is an official who is elected on a county-wide basis for a four-year term. As with any large organazation, the Office of the County Clerk is tailored to provide the various services required by law.
